Lucy Tejada

Lucy Tejada Sáenz (born October 9, 1920 in Pereira , Colombia ; † November 2, 2011 in Cali ) was a Colombian painter .

life and work

Tejada graduated from the Liceo Benalcazar in Cali. After her mother's death, she moved to Bogotá to study at the Pontifical University of Xaveriana . From there she went to the Academia Fine Arts Bogotá, where she graduated. Here she met her future husband, the painter Antonio Valencia. She studied at the San Fernando Academy and the School of Graphic Arts in Madrid , Spain. After visiting La Guajira in 1947 she had her first solo exhibition. She showed her work in the Venice Biennale as well as in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Cuba. After traveling around Europe, she returned to Cali, Colombia. She lived without scholarships and without government support, always selling her works. Tejada founded the Lucy Tejada Foundation with her family and close friends. The Lucy Tejada Cultural Center in Pereira was inaugurated on August 30, 2005 in honor of Lucy Tejada. After Tejada's death and according to her will, the family gave the city of Pereira their picture collection with 163 works. To commemorate her 98th birthday, Google published a Google Doodle on October 9, 2018 .
