Ludwig Czimatis

Ludwig Heinrich Christian August Czimatis (born January 26, 1861 in Wittgenstein Castle ; † November 21, 1942 in Bottrop ) was a German social politician and a pioneer in occupational safety.

Life

After attending school in Laasphe and Barmen, Ludwig Czimatis studied chemistry at the Polytechnic in Aachen. In 1879 he became a member of the professional association of chemists and metallurgists , the later Corps Montania. In 1882 he was awarded a doctorate degree from the University of Tübingen - the Aachen University only acquired the right to award doctorates in 1899. phil. PhD. He then worked as a company chemist and operations manager in various plants, including five years in Oberhausen. At the end of 1891 he joined the Prussian trade supervisory service, where he initially worked in Opole and as a trade inspector, head of the trade court and chairman of the court of arbitration for social insurance in Katowice.

In 1899 he became a trade council and chairman of the trade court in Solingen. Here, through his commitment, he achieved a sustainable improvement in occupational safety and the health conditions of the Solingen metalworkers. In 1908 he was appointed government and trade council and state council at the Silesian Chamber of Crafts in Wroclaw. At the same time he held lectures on trade law at the University of Wroclaw.

In 1921 Czimatis was appointed to the Berlin Police Headquarters as a senior government councilor and was appointed a member of the Technical Deputation for Trade and the Examination Office for Trade Supervisors, which was affiliated to the Ministry of Commerce. From 1923 until his retirement in 1927, he worked as a senior government and trade council for the Düsseldorf district government. He then worked as a sworn expert for the chambers of industry and commerce in Düsseldorf and Solingen in an expert and advisory capacity.

Czirmatis made great contributions to the further development of occupational safety. In particular, he campaigned for employers and employees to take responsibility for ensuring and improving occupational safety. He was the author of numerous articles on occupational health and safety.

  • In 1961, the city of Solingen erected a memorial in memory of Ludwig Czimatis on the occasion of his 100th birthday at the confluence of Wupperstraße and Goerdelerstraße, a sculpture of two interlocking whetstones held by a steel frame made of square tubing.
