Ludwig Ferdinand Herbst (also Louis Ferdinand Herbst , born June 30, 1811 in Hamburg , † November 23, 1894 ibid) was a German classical philologist and high school teacher.

Life

Ludwig Ferdinand Herbst, the son of the master shoemaker Johann Peter Herbst (1773-1858), attended the Johanneum School of Academics from 1824 to 1831 and the Academic High School in Hamburg from 1831 to 1832 . He then studied Classical Philology at the Universities of Göttingen and Berlin , where he was particularly influenced by Karl Otfried Müller and Karl Lachmann . After graduating as Dr. phil. in Berlin in 1835 he returned to Hamburg and taught from April 1 at the Johanneum Realschule, initially as an assistant teacher, from 1837 as a collaborator and from 1840 as a full teacher. On April 1, 1851, he was transferred to the Johanneum School of Academics as a professor and remained there until his retirement (Easter 1876).

Herbst occupied himself with the history of Thucydides all his life . He published essays on his style and textual criticism, the sum of which he worked out in retirement. Some of his studies were published by the Quedlinburg high school teacher Franz Müller only after his death.

From May 1844, Herbst was married to Ida Kunhardt (1823–1870), the daughter of the businessman Carl Philipp Kunhardt . The couple's son was the painter Thomas Herbst (1848–1915).

In the Ohlsdorf cemetery , Ludwig Ferdinand Herbst is commemorated on the collective grave slab of the Johanneum of the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery.
