Ludwig Georg Delius

Ludwig Georg Delius (also Louis Delius ) (born March 2, 1807 in Reineberg near Lübbecke ; † October 10, 1866 in Bremen ) was a German overseas merchant and founder of the company Louis Delius & Co.

biography

Delius came from the East Westphalian line of the Delius family. His father was the Commissioner Conrad Wilhelm Delius and his mother Henriette Amalie Anna Clara Louise (née Schultze). He married Anna Regina Delius, daughter of overseas merchant and secret councilor Christian Friedrich Delius (1770–1823), from the Bremen line of the Delius family. They had three children together. The son Friedrich Wilhelm took over the family business after the death of his father.

Delius became a citizen of Bremen in 1832. Together with his partner Christian Gercke, he was the founder of the still existing overseas company Louis Delius & Co in 1832 . In the tradition of the Delius family, the company began trading canvas. Other products were added later. A comprehensive forwarding, export and banking business developed from this. Initially, business with the North American continent dominated. In return for the supply of products imported from Germany Delius & Co . Tobacco, coffee, wool and other agricultural products. After the linen export decreased in the middle of the 19th century, the business increasingly shifted to Central and South America. The focus was on the import of coffee from Colombia and Venezuela. In contrast, industrial products were exported.

He was also the Prussian consul general in Bremen from 1856 . This position remained in the family until 1911.
