The Louis Delius & Co. is a 1832 in Bremen based company for products, logistics , insurance and financing its own offices in Germany, China , Singapore , South Africa and 18 offices in Latin America .

history

In 1832, Ludwig Delius and his partner Christian Gercke founded the still existing overseas company Louis Delius & Co. In the tradition of the Delius family, the company began trading canvas . The company initially sold linen to Latin America and brought tobacco to Europe on the way back. Cotton and coffee and other products were added later. From this a comprehensive forwarding, export and banking business developed. Initially, business with the North American continent dominated. In return for the delivery of products from Germany, Delius imported tobacco, coffee, wool and other agricultural products. After the linen export decreased in the middle of the 19th century, the business increasingly shifted to Central and South America. The focus was on the import of coffee from Colombia and Venezuela. In contrast, industrial products were exported.

In 1886, after the death of Ludwig Delius, his son F. Wilhelm Delius ran the company. He was also Consul General of Prussia . Then there were the co-owners of the company FLH Haupt, C. Merkel and H. Bremermann . The company was based at that time in the long road no. 10 in Bremen and moved to the First World War to Geeren no. 10/12 in Bremen to.

In 1910 the export department for tools, machines and iron goods from Germany was established. Due to the increasing demand from Latin America, this area became the main business of the trading group after 1950.

The First World War seriously affected the business. For a short time the company was able to record a clear upswing when the global economic crisis of 1929 led to setbacks again. The junior partner (since 1910) Carl August Merkel should have been the determining personality at the time. Merkel had been a member of the Bremen Chamber of Commerce since 1936 and directed the wholesale, import and export business. The foreign exchange restrictions in the time of National Socialism significantly hindered foreign trade. In 1939, due to the Second World War , the company had to switch to other business areas, such as the textile trade with Galicia . The business and storage rooms were bombed out in 1944.

After the war, the company in Goebenstrasse 9 was active in retail and wholesale. In the late 1940s, the coffee trade with South America was added again. In 1950 Carl August Merkel took his son Carl Otto Merkel (1914–2003) into the management, who then took over the management of the company after his death in 1954. In 1952, Louis Delius & Co. moved into offices at Parkallee No. 32. When the volume of trade fluctuated, the retail range consisted of tobacco, coffee and industrial goods.

In 1995 Volker Schütte (* 1958) joined the management with his experience in South Africa. Schütte has been Honorary Consul of South Africa since 2002 and a member of Haus Seefahrt . The coffee business has now been given up and the trade in industrial products increased. Since 2006 the import of semi-finished metal products has also been resumed.
