from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ludwig I of Nassau-Weilburg (* around 1473 ; † May 28, 1523 ) was Count of Nassau-Weilburg from 1492 to 1523 .

Life

He was the son of Johann III. (1441–1480) and grandson of Philip II of Nassau-Weilburg . His mother was Elisabeth von Hessen (1453–1489), daughter of Landgrave Ludwig the Peaceful .

The father died in 1480. Ludwig was therefore initially under the guardianship of his grandfather and from 1488 under that of Archbishop Berthold of Mainz and Landgrave Wilhelm II of Hesse . On their behalf, Eberhard von Merenberg and Eberhard Stümmel managed government affairs.

After he had taken over the regency himself, the inheritance was agreed with the Nassau-Saarbrücken house in 1491 . He gave up the rule again in 1496 when he appointed Johann Ludwig von Nassau-Saarbrücken as curator and handed over the business of government to him.

Since 1501 he was with Maria Margaretha, daughter of Count Adolf III. from Nassau-Wiesbaden-Idstein , married. The marriage had six children. Three of them died in childhood. Among the surviving children were:

  • Philipp (September 20, 1504 - October 4, 1559)
⚭ 1523 Elisabeth von Sayn († February 5, 1531)
⚭ 1536 Anna von Mansfeld († December 26, 1537)
⚭ 1541 Amalie von Isenburg-Büdingen (born June 23, 1522 - † May 18, 1579)

He was buried in the St. Walpurgis Abbey in Weilburg . His grave slab is preserved there.
