Ludwig Imhoff (born October 22, 1801 in Basel ; † September 13, 1868 there ) was a Swiss doctor and entomologist.

Life

Imhoff grew up as the son of the businessman Hieronymus Imhoff and his wife Johanna geb. Wenk up in Basel. He attended Samuel Hopf's teaching and educational institution in Basel , which worked according to the educational methods of Johann Heinrich Pestalozzi . He then attended the pedagogy in Basel . In 1820, at his father's request, he began to study law, which he broke off and switched to medicine. He studied in Strasbourg, Heidelberg, Halle and Berlin. In 1826, after completing his studies, he returned to Basel. Here he worked as a doctor and natural scientist. He married Maria Julia Auguste Heitz in 1829. He completed his habilitation at the University of Basel as a zoologist with a focus on entomology. Also from 1826 he began working on the entomological collection of the Natural History Museum Basel . He also created a collection of European insects for the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Harvard University .

Imhoff was a member of several natural history societies, such as from 1826 the Natural Research Society of the Canton of Basel and from 1827 the Swiss Natural History Society. From 1859 he was a member and 1868-1870 President of the Swiss Entomological Society. Here he was particularly active in the areas of the systematics of the Hymenoptera and Coleoptera .
