Ludwig Maring

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Rudolf Ludwig Maring (* 1820 ; † 1893 ) was a Swiss architect . From 1854 to 1861 he was director of the Swiss Central Railway .

Live and act

As SCB's in-house architect, Maring designed, in collaboration with chief engineer Wilhelm Pressel , various types of buildings for the Aarburg-Emmenbrücke, Bern-Thun and Emmenbrücke-Lucerne lines , including not only the reception buildings of all stations and (at the larger stations with transfer traffic) the platform halls, but also Turntables, water cranes and all ancillary systems. The first station in Bern , which was not intended to be a provisional facility from the outset , was built between 1858 and 1860 and was also planned by him; however, the building was demolished in the 1870s in favor of a through station. Again in collaboration with Pressel, he designed the Basler Centralbahnhof, which opened in 1860, and which is the predecessor of today's SBB train station . Three site managers worked under Maring, including Johann Jenzer , architect of the Bernese State Railways .

As early as 1857, Maring developed a general plan for the expansion of Basel after removing the previous fortifications of the city , but this was not implemented.

From 1859 to 1887 Maring was a member of the Grand Council of the City of Basel. He is also one of the founders of the Basel Architects and Engineers Association.

Because of the new construction of the Basel SBB train station at the same location, the Centralbahnhof was demolished and some parts were reused in other locations. The eastern platform hall was brought to the Olten train station and used there to build a workshop shed for the SBB. Rediscovered after more than 100 years, the SBB donated the building, clad in Swiss wood style (fretwork style) with support elements made of cast iron, to the Zürcher Oberland Steam Railway Association in 2009 . The hall, now under protection as a monument of national importance, was first stored in Hinwil , then restored and rebuilt as a shed for the rolling stock of the museum railway in Bauma . Inauguration was on September 6, 2015. The second hall is in the Zurich freight yard on Hohlstrasse .
