Ludwig Eduard Robert Matthäi (born February 21, 1813 in Halbendorf near Striegau , † March 16, 1897 in Rawitsch ) was a German lawyer and politician .

Life

Born the son of a former landowner, Matthäi studied law in Breslau from 1832 to 1834 after attending grammar school in Schweidnitz . During his studies in 1830 he became a member of the old Breslau fraternity Arminia , which he chaired as spokesman . Together with Wilhelm Wolff (publicist) , among others , he belonged to the political wing of the fraternity , which is why he was arrested in 1834 in the course of the persecution of demagogues . In 1835 he was released, but in December 1835 by the Court of Berlin to incapacity and six years fortress arrest was condemned. The sentence was later reduced. He served her from September 1836 to September 1837 in the prison in Breslau. After he had regained his employability and was able to complete his studies and legal clerkship in the 1840s, he worked as an assessor at the Higher Regional Court in Breslau . In 1846 he became mayor of Lauban in Silesia , where he was one of the leaders of the democratic movement during the revolution of 1848/49 . In 1848 he took part in the meetings and votes of the Prussian convention assembly as a deputy representative . He belonged to the extreme left and became a member of the Parliament's Petitions Commission, which drafted the "Address against the Government's Coup". As a form of protest, he enforced that the city of Lauban temporarily stopped paying taxes. In 1849 he was elected to the Prussian Second Chamber , where he joined the determined left. Because of his revolutionary views and actions, he was questioned by the Liegnitz district government as a municipal official , but was re-elected mayor in 1851. However, this election was not confirmed by the government and he resigned from the community service. Until 1859 he worked as a lawyer in Berlin and then became a lawyer and notary at the regional court in Lissa and Posen. In 1874 he became a councilor .
