Ludwig Sauer (born December 20, 1861 in Kronberg im Taunus , † March 25, 1940 in Kronberg im Taunus) was a German organist and composer.

Life

Ludwig Sauer was born in Kronberg (in the Streitkirche ), attended the teachers' seminar in Montabaur and the Kgl. Academic Institute for Church Music in Berlin . From 1893 he worked as a music teacher at the Viktoria boarding school in Dornholzhausen in the Taunus. He led several choirs (including in Falkenstein, Oberursel, Königstein, Kronberg and Schönberg) and was an advisor to Empress Friedrich for their house music events at Schloss Friedrichshof .

Services

As an organist in Schönberg, a village that today belongs to Kronberg im Taunus , Ludwig Sauer planned the construction of a new organ at his St. Alban church at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and asked numerous composers for a free contribution to finance it . He combined the 36 works he created into an organ album , which he published in 1900 by Breitkopf & Härtel. Among the works created in this way, Max Reger's well-known Introduction and Passacaglia in D minor from 1899 should be mentioned, the first edition of which made the collection organ history. The album contains both free and chorale-related pieces, because of the shortness of the contributions the band was and is often used in church services and lessons.
