Ludwig Zier

Ludwig Zier (born September 20, 1955 in Nagel , Wunsiedel district) is a German blind chess player and tournament organizer.

Chess successes

Ludwig Zier won consecutive German blind chess championships in 1981, 1983, 1985 and 1987 . This record was only set in 2007 by Dieter Bischoff . Furthermore, the 4th place at the World Championship for the blind in Hastings in 1982 and the 3rd place at the Blind Chess Olympiad in Hungary in 1988, when Zier played on board 1, are among his greatest successes. In total, Zier took part in three Blind Chess Olympiads (1976, 1985 and 1988). Zier played in the 2nd Bundesliga chess league in the 1982/83 season for SC Straubing , from 1983 to 1985 for SK Passau and from 1996 to 1998 for SK Hof . Zier received the title of International Master in Correspondence Chess in 2002 . Zier has held the title of Candidate Masters in chess since November 2008 . Zier's Elo rating is 2240 (as of May 2016), but he is listed as inactive because he did not play an Elo-rated game after the Open International Bavarian Championship in Bad Wiessee in October 2001 . He reached his highest Elo rating of 2255 in July 1992.

Others

In 2001 Ludwig Zier started a chess group at the Jean Paul Elementary School in Wunsiedel. In the following years, others followed at the local secondary school and the Luisenburg grammar school. In May 2003, Zier founded the chess department of SpVgg Wunsiedel. An international chess festival has been held in Wunsiedel every year since 2007. This tournament was initiated by Zier and has been organized since then.

Private

Ludwig Zier lives in Wunsiedel (Upper Franconia), where he worked in the district office until 2001. He has been completely blind from glaucoma since he was nine years old. He has been married since 1984 and has two children.
