Part of the largest limestone bog in Germany |
The Ludwigshofer See is located in the east of the Vorpommern-Greifswald district in the eastern part of the Ueckermünder Heide near the Polish border. The body of water is located in the municipality of Ahlbeck near the eponymous district of Ludwigshof. The lake is approximately 430 meters wide and 540 meters long. It has an undivided form.
The lake emerged from the former Ahlbeck lake, which was drained in the 18th and 19th centuries . At the beginning of the 20th century, when the water level rose again in the Ahlbeck lake, the lake was created in a dredging hole that had been used to extract sea sludge. The area around the lake is the largest growing limestone bog in Germany.
The lake is part of the 1987 Ahlbecker Seegrund nature reserve , which has been part of the Am Stettiner Haff Nature Park since 2005 .
