Ludwik Jerzy Kern

Ludwik Jerzy Kern (born December 29, 1920 in Łódź , † October 29, 2010 in Krakow ) was a Polish writer, journalist and literary translator.

Life

Ludwik Jerzy Kern grew up in his hometown Łódź, where he also passed the high school diploma at the humanistic grammar school. In 1938 he published his first poems in the magazine Ilustrowany Kurier Codzienny . After the invasion of Germany on September 1, 1939, he became a soldier and took part in the September fighting against the occupiers. After the complete occupation of Poland, he got by with odd jobs. After the suppression of the Warsaw Uprising , Kern went to Krakow . In 1945 further poems appeared in Krakow. In 1947 he went back to Łódź for the Polish Press Agency , but finally moved to Krakow in 1948.

From 1948 to 1982 Ludwik Jerzy Kern was part of the editorial team of the weekly Przekrój . He officially retired in 1982 but continued to work as a freelancer for the magazine. The collaboration was only ended in 2002 after the editorial team moved to Warsaw .

In addition to his journalistic activities, Kern wrote numerous song texts for performers such as Mieczysław Fogg and satirical programs. One of his most popular books is the children's book The Fabulous Ferdinand , which was also shown as an animated series on Polish television. He published texts under numerous pseudonyms : u. a. Dr Wist, Eljotka, Fra Lodowico Giorgio Cern, H. Olekinaz, Holekinaz, Louis George Cern, Ludwik Jerzy Coeurn and Ludwik Jerzy Życzliwy. Kern translated books a. a. by Isaac Bashevis Singer , Roald Dahl and Uri Orlev into Polish.

Ludwik Jerzy Kern was married to Adela Nowicka from 1942 to 1948 and since 1954 with the actress and theater director Marta Stebnicka (* 1925).
