history

Airship ground anchor found in the 1970s, Cologne-Ossendorf

At the suggestion of the City of Cologne, the War Ministry Berlin built an airship hangar in Cologne-Bickendorf between Venloer Straße and Ossendorfer Weg . The hall was built by MAN by May 1909 and offered space for three airships . A division of the Berlin Airship Battalion was transferred to Cologne as advance command and housed in Fort IV in Bocklemünd until the barracks were completed. By August 1909 three airships had been relocated to Cologne. This included the Zeppelin LZ 5 (military Z II) in August, which was destroyed by a squall near Limburg as early as 1910 . On October 1, 1911, the Airship Battalion 3 was formed from the advance command.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the barracks took place on June 1, 1913. The officers' mess stood next to the main building with the canteen . After the end of the war in 1918 and the end of the occupation from 1919 to 1926, the buildings were used as residential buildings until they were demolished in 1971. During the demolition, a few hours before the destruction, a ground anchor for airships was found and recovered on a private initiative with the help of the Cologne fire department. Probably the last surviving airship anchor was first exhibited in the Butzweilerhof Aviation Museum (1986–1996), and since the museum had to close due to lack of money, it is now in the glass house of a transport company about 300 m from where it was found.
