Luigi Ernesto Alva y Talledo (born April 10, 1927 in Lima ) is a Peruvian opera singer ( lyric tenor ) and singing teacher. His focus was on operas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gioachino Rossini . His interpretations of Don Ottavio in Don Giovanni and Count Almaviva in Il barbiere di Siviglia were particularly appreciated .

Life

After first singing studies in his native Peru Alva in 1953 moved to Milan, where he in 1954 as Alfredo in Verdi's La traviata debuted and in the vocal Academy of Scala was taken. Alva achieved her breakthrough in 1956 with his engagement as Count Almaviva at the side of Maria Callas . In the following years he sang at all important festivals and in the major European opera houses. He made his debut at the Metropolitan Opera in New York in 1964.

In the 1960s and 1970s, Luigi Alva was one of the undisputed stars of the international opera scene. He worked with the greatest conductors of the time such as Otto Klemperer , Herbert von Karajan , Carlo Maria Giulini and Claudio Abbado . He always remained true to his original repertoire and declined further offers.

In 1982 Alva returned to Peru to devote himself to teaching. He took his final farewell from the stage in 1989. To this day, Alva works as a singing teacher at La Scala in Milan and organizes opera performances in his hometown of Lima.
