Luigi Francesco Leonardo Desanctis (also de Sanctis; ) (born December 31, 1808 in Rome , † December 31, 1869 in Florence ) was an Italian Roman Catholic and later Waldensian theologian and was one of the most important personalities of Italian Protestantism in the nineteenth century. He published his liberal political ideas, which were widely spread in Italy.

Life

Luigi Desanctis was born to Biagio Desanctis and Camilla Forzi, the eldest son of twenty-four children whom his father had with four other wives.

In 1831 he was ordained a Catholic priest as a member of the Camillian Order , having previously taught in Genoa. For a while he was pastor at the Church of Santa Maria Maddalena in Rome before he went to Genoa in 1835 to work as a pastor for the sick during the cholera epidemic there . Doubts about the truth of Catholic doctrine, which through the work of Pope Pius IX. were reinforced, moved him to go to Malta in 1847 . There he married and stayed on the island until 1850, paying a brief visit to Tuscany in 1848. Then he went to Switzerland . He later joined the Waldensian Church. On August 31, 1853 he was ordained as their pastor in Torre Pellice and also worked in Turin. In later life he devoted himself mainly to his writing activities and wrote apologetic and polemical writings against the Roman Catholic Church .
