Luigi Di Gianni (born October 20, 1926 in Naples , † May 10, 2019 in Rome ) was an Italian documentary filmmaker .

Life

After graduating in philosophy, Di Gianni attended the Centro Sperimentale di Cinematografia , which he left in 1954 with his medium-length directing diploma thesis L'arresto . After a short time as an assistant director , he realized cultural programs and films for Italian television. His passion, however, was documentary film , where he treated anthropological, social, historical and art issues in short films .

Among Di Gianni's productions, in addition to the early La frattura and Il gallo canta a mezzanotte (a very early Giallo ) made for television in 1957, a Kafka film adaptation from 1978 and his contribution to the 1962 episode film I misteri di Roma stand out, one of his very own rare contributions to the movie. In 1974 Il tempo dell'inizio was a small success at the box office.

Di Gianni also worked as a lecturer at the Università della Calabria and the NUCT (Nuova Università del Cinema e della Televisione). From 2005 to 2008 he was again a lecturer, this time at the Università di Lecce and the Accademia dell'Immagine in L'Aquila .

La tana received the Palme d'Or for best short film in 1967 ; Di Gianni's works were twice honored with the Italian Nastro d'Argento film award - in 1975 (his only feature film) and in 1988.
