Luigi Donati (born April 4, 1846 in Fossombrone , † March 7, 1932 in Bologna ) was an Italian mathematician and physicist.

Donati obtained his Laureate Degree in Physics from the University of Pisa in 1871 and previously studied at the Scuola Normale Superiore. In 1886 he became a professor for special physics at the Polytechnic in Milan and from 1877 taught mathematical physics at the University of Bologna . Afterwards he was a lecturer in technical physics and electrical engineering at the engineering school in Bologna, of which he also became director.

He dealt with elasticity theory and electromagnetism . In the theory of elasticity, he showed that Menabrea and Castigliano's theorems not only have useful applications in statics, but also represent fundamental properties of elastic bodies. He also made significant contributions to the tension function .

In 1902 he became a corresponding member of the Accademia dei Lincei .
