Luigi Enrico Rossi

Luigi Enrico Rossi (born July 20, 1933 in Rome , † September 19, 2009 there ) was an Italian classical philologist .

Life

Luigi Enrico Rossi studied philology at La Sapienza University in Rome, with whom he remained connected until the end of his life. His academic teachers included Carlo Gallavotti , Bruno Gentili , Scevola Mariotti and Gennaro Perrotta , whose last pupil was Rossi.

After completing his studies, Rossi was assistant for classical philology from 1960 to 1965, from 1965 adjunct professor ( Professore incaricato ), finally from 1980 to October 31, 2007 full professor for Greek literature at the University of La Sapienza.

Rossi has been involved in international exchange since the 1960s and has become a particularly symbol of German-Italian relations. Research stays took him to Germany, England, the USA and Switzerland, and in later years to Egypt, Spain and Argentina. He was a full member of the L'Arcadia literary society , the Society for the Promotion of Hellenic Studies and the Parnassos Academy of Athens. On December 9, 2005, the University of Freiburg awarded him an honorary doctorate.

Rossi's research focus was Greek literature and cultural history. He dealt with the epic and lyrical poetry of the archaic period, with the symposium , with the Greek theater of the 5th century BC. BC, with Hellenistic poetry, with literary and genre theory as well as with ancient metrics and music.
