Life

Bruno Gentili, son of Attilio Gentili and Giuseppina Cicciarelli, was born on November 20, 1915 in Valmontone ( Province of Rome ) as the first of four children. He was married in first marriage with Lina Mulè, with whom he had two children, in second marriage with the Gräzistin Franca Perusino.

For family reasons - his father was a station master - he spent his youth in Abruzzo . He attended the classical high school "Ovidio" in Sulmona . In the 1930s he began studying at La Sapienza University in Rome. He studied Greek studies with Ettore Romagnoli at the University of Rome and completed his studies with Silvio Giuseppe Mercati with a dissertation in Byzantine philology entitled Studio critico intorno alla storia di Agatia e alla sua tradizione manoscritta (“Critical study of the history of Agathias and his handwritten tradition "). He was then a high school teacher, including at the Liceo Classico "Virgilio" in Rome, before he was appointed assistant at the University of Rome. He worked there as Gennaro Perrotta's assistant . The scientific results of this time were two standard works on Greek metrics : "Metrica greca arcaica" (1950) and "La metrica dei Greci" (1952), which together in the new version "Metrica e ritmica. Storia delle forme poetiche della Grecia antica “were published in 2003.

In the years when Perrotta could no longer fully carry out his work for health reasons, Gentili taught students, including the classical philologist Giuseppe Aurelio Privitera , in ancient Greek. The work of the 1950s resulted in two works on metrics and poetry : in Bacchilide. Studi (1958) and the Anakreon edition (1958), which was awarded the Premio Salento 1959. This founded the series "Lyricorum Graecorum quae exstant", which marked a new path in the historical-critical edition of archaic poets . For a few years he worked at the University of Lecce , where he was in close contact with Carlo Prato (1920-2004). With him he was later editor of Teubner's edition of the elegiac poets (Volume 1, 1988; Volume 2, 2002).

In 1956 he was appointed to the University of Urbino , initially as an honorary professor for Greek literature, from 1963 he was full professor there. . From that year until his retirement in 1991 and beyond, Gentili remained associated with the university as director of the Centro internazionale di studi sulla cultura greca antica (“International Center for the Study of Ancient Greek Culture”) and held this position until his retirement academic positions. Gentili's last lecture in Urbino took place on May 5th, 2004 at the request of the students attending a seminar on the Medea des Euripides .

In 1964 he founded the Centro di studi sulla lirica greca e sulla metrica greca e latina ("Center for the Study of Greek Poetry and Greek and Latin Metrics") in Urbino . He was editor of the magazine Quaderni Urbinati di Cultura Classica , which he founded in 1966 . From 1968 to 2001, Gentili was Dean of the Humanities Faculty of Urbino.

He translated Greek authors into Italian: Anacreon and Pindars Pythika , Medea by Euripides and Elektra by Sophocles . For the Lorenzo Valla Foundation he co-edited Pindar's Pythian Odes (Milan 1994) and Olympic Odes . For Poesia e pubblico nella Grecia antica. Da Omero al V secolo ("Poetry and the public in ancient Greece. From Homer to the fifth century") he was awarded the Premio Viareggio for non-fiction in 1984.
