Luigi Grassi
Luigi Grassi (* around 1740 in Rome , † around 1802 in Pisa ) was an Italian opera singer ( tenor ).
Life
Luigi Grassi came to Germany in 1766, where he was employed as the first tenor at the Royal Opera of Berlin in 1768 . Here he sang numerous roles in operas by famous contemporary German and Italian composers. He embodied Merope in Niccolò Jommelli's Fetonte , Jarba in the setting of the libretto Didone abbandonata by the German composer Johann Adolph Hasse , and in 1771 the Tezeuco in Montezuma by Carl Heinrich Graun . Towards the end of his singing career he appeared on February 2, 1788 as Cepheus in the world premiere of the opera Andromeda by Johann Friedrich Reichardt . In 1789 he was bid farewell by the Prussian king because of his weakened health with a life-long annual pension of 500 thalers. He chose to live in Pisa, where he composed small piano pieces (mostly variations on popular opera themes) and died around 1802.
