8000 scouts from 34 countries took part in the event, which took place in a glass-roofed building on an area of around 24,000 m². At this event, Robert Baden-Powell , the founder of the Boy Scout Movement, was declared Chief Scout of the World, the worldwide leader of the movement. The movement's secretary was AG Wade.

Olympia and camping

The Olympic arena was covered with a 30 cm deep layer of earth, which allowed the scouts to pitch tents in the hall. Nevertheless, around 5000 of the participants had to be accommodated at Old Deer Park in nearby Richmond . The participants therefore had to drive to the hall again and again to take part in the activities offered there. When the Thames flooded the camp one night , some of the guests had to be evacuated.

500 wolves perform a grand howl in the arena

During the jamborees, numerous competitions, pageants and exhibitions were held in the hall.

Chief Scout of the World

In order to honor Baden-Powell as the founder of the movement, suggested James E. West, the Chief Scout Executive of the American Boy Scouts, to give him the title of "Great Indian Chief".

During the ceremony, at which the title was to be awarded, one of the young boy scouts shouted "Long live the Chief Scout of the World", which then became the official title of Baden-Powell within the boy scout movement. Baden-Powell kept this title until his death.

No other boy scout carried this title to Baden-Powell because it cannot be bestowed by a national head of government.
