Luis Flòres (missionary)
Luis Flòres (born 1574 in Antwerp ; died August 19, 1622 in Japan ) was a Flemish missionary of the Dominican Order in Mexico and the Far East.
life and work
Luis Flòres was born in Antwerp, then the Spanish Netherlands . He emigrated to Mexico with his parents and entered the Dominican order there. He became a priest and was sent to the Philippines as a novice master in 1602. Together with Pedro de Zúñiga he traveled to Japan in 1620. Within sight of Formosa , his ship was seized by the English ship "Elizabeth" and then handed over to the Dutch in Hirado . These handed him over to the Japanese in Nagasaki. After two years of torture in prison, he and Zúñiga were sentenced to death by burning in 1622, as were a number of Japanese believers.
In 1867 Flòres was beatified.
