Luis Zagler (2014)

Luis Zagler (born February 5, 1954 in Tyrol ) is a German-speaking playwright and author of stories , poems and children's musicals . He is the founder of the SchlossFestSpiele Dorf Tirol and the MeranerFestSpiele.

life and work

Luis Zagler was born the eldest son of a merchant family, grew up with four siblings in a middle-class family and received a university education. His literary and musical talent showed up early on. His first play was created at the age of 17. This first part of the mountain farmer trilogy was premiered in the Bolzano Waltherhaus as part of the “South Tyrolean Initiative”, recorded by RAI in a production by Peter Mitterrutzner , produced as a radio play and filmed by Bavarian television. In the book Wegweiser zur Literatur Tirol since 1945 , Paul Wimmer wrote about this first work: "Such an outcry from the creature has not been heard since Gerhart Hauptmann's play Die Weber ."

Following these initial successes, Luis Zagler began studying comparative literature at the Leopold-Franzens University in Innsbruck with Zoran Konstantinovic and, at the same time, studying composition with Robert Nessler at the Tyrolean State Conservatory and worked as an assistant director at the Tyrolean State Theater. He then attended a stage design course with Günther Schneider-Siemssen in Salzburg and made contacts with the theaters there. The meetings with the directors Klaus Rohrmoser, Claus Homschak, Franz Kainrath, Rudolf Strobl and Andreas Lippl are also important for his further work. Stays in Munich, Vienna and Salzburg follow.

After completing his studies in comparative literature with distinction in 1985 - with a dissertation on Shakespeare at the theater in Innsbruck - he met Felix Mitterer and Hans Brenner in 1986 . The friendships led to the fact that in 1988 his play Bread was premiered at the Tyrolean Volksschauspiele . The play was a success with the public and the press. "As if Samuel Beckett had arrived at the Volkstheater," wrote the Süddeutsche Zeitung . The Kurier read: “A frenzied, painful manifesto about isolation in poverty, loneliness that changes people, and an overall artistic event of socio-political explosiveness and rare beauty as an example of modern folk theater.” In the same year, Zagler received the Austrian state scholarship for playwrights. At the same time, the second part of the mountain farmer trilogy was premiered.

At the Innsbruck Summer Games initiated by Ekkehard Schönwiese in cooperation with the Brixenthaler Volkstheater, the drama Either - Or was performed in the Theater im Turm in 1989 . In the Kitzbüheler Nachrichten , Winfried Werner Linde wrote: "The actors (...) succeeded in a dense, dramatic performance that is not only worth seeing, but also points far beyond the normal folk theater into the future." In 1990, Brot am Small theater in Salzburg recognized by the Austrian Federal Ministry as one of the most valuable performances of the year.

On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Tyrolean folk drama, Vogelfrei premiered in 1991 with Hans Brenner and Julia Gschnitzer in the leading roles. The historical play is about the people of the Karrner who roamed the country with their carts until the beginning of the 20th century. The ORF theater magazine speaks of “juicy folk plays” and “audience hits”. In the same year, Luis Zagler received the Austrian State Scholarship for Dramatists for the second time.

In the following years a number of instrumental compositions for flute and orchestra, some children's musicals and several choral songs as well as stories and poems were written.

In 2017 the theater play The Persecuted was premiered . The piece is based on a true story from the Vinschgau in the 19th century, which Zagler was entrusted by an 80-year-old woman as her grandfather's notes. The promise that the woman had to make to her grandfather led to the foundation of the Castle Festival in 2016, which was initiated by Luis Zagler. The first performance of the drama in the outer bailey of Schoss Tirol is a success.

In 2018, Zagler founded the MeranerFestSpiele, which premiered in the same year with the first performance of his play The Heirs . The first performance of the play The Presidents took place in 2019 as part of the MeranerFestSpiele on the occasion of the commemorative year "100 Years of the Paris Peace Treaty ", "100 Years of the Partition of Tyrol " . The performances on the new festival area above the gardens of Trauttmansdorff Castle developed into a crowd puller.
