from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Luise Meyer-Strasser (born May 12, 1894 in Aussersihl , † January 14, 1974 in Zurich ) was a Swiss painter and craftswoman. Meyer-Strasser produced embroidery and ceramics, painted porcelain, engobes , furniture and a few house walls. There are also many sketches, but also acrylic pictures of her. In her early work, she leaned on Expressionism with bright colors , and some embroideries were committed to Art Nouveau in their vegetal ornamentation .

Life

Luise Strasser completed an embroidery apprenticeship in Zurich. When she was 20, she and her friend Berta Tappolet went to Munich for three years because they were allowed to study at the local arts and crafts school . In January 1918 she returned to Zurich and devoted herself to her art in a new studio. In 1927 she married the architect and professor Peter Meyer . A boy was born in 1932 and a girl in 1935. In 1937 Luise Meyer-Strasser opened the small store "Cornelius" on Oberdorfstrasse in Zurich together with Cornelia Forster , Berta Tappolet and Amatha Good . There the artists sold their works. In March 1970 the first exhibition, which exclusively contained her work, opened at Orell-Füssli. In autumn 2019 the Museum Villa Flora in Winterthur dedicated a guest exhibition to her.

Public works

Luise Meyer-Strasser created wall paintings in 1928 in the kindergarten of the newly created urban settlement Erismannhof (named after the city councilor Friedrich Erismann ).

The “zur Münz” house in Zurich was converted into a coffee restaurant in 1940 by the architect Lux Guyer . She brought in Berta Tappolet, Luise Meyer-Strasser, Cornelia Forster and Margherita Oswald-Toppi to create a cozy atmosphere in the rooms. The building was demolished in the 1960s after being destroyed by fire and replaced by a new building that serves a different purpose.
