life and work

Luke Pearson grew up near Birmingham. In 2010 he graduated from university with a degree in illustration and has been working as a freelance illustrator ever since. With Some People (2010) and Dull Ache 1 - A collection of comics and drawings by Luke Pearson (2010) Luke Pearson self-published two comic albums. With Hildafolk (2010, 2013 reissue under the title Hilda and the Troll ), Everything we miss (2011), Hilda and the Midnight Giant (2011), Hilda and the Bird Parade (2012), Hilda and the Black Hound (2014) and Hilda and the Stone Forest (2016) have published six comics by Pearson by Nobrow Verlag in London (from 2013 under the inprint Flying Eye Books). These comics are also available in German translation. Pearson's Hilda series was received euphorically in the features section:

“Poetry, wit, elegance - and for readers of all ages and both genders. The Hilda series is a sensation. "

- Andreas Platthaus : Girls for everyone , in: FAZ from February 26, 2013

For the fifth and seventh seasons of the animated series Adventure Time , Pearson wrote the scripts for four episodes, in which he also contributed the storyboards . When his Hilda comic series was adapted for Netflix , he also wrote scripts for it.

In addition to his comic albums, his comics have also appeared in anthologies such as Solipsistic Pop , A Graphic Cosmogony and The Stool Pigeon , and some on the Internet. Pearson illustrated covers for magazines such as The New Yorker and Romane, including Random House and Simon & Schuster. In 2012 he illustrated the browser game The End . Luke Pearson lives in Nottingham with his girlfriend.

Artistic style

“This graphical flexibility is typical of Pearson; It is remarkable how much he varies his drawing style: Everything We Miss is very clear and reduced in the lines as well as in the black-gray-orange coloring, the Hilda volumes are characterized by a far cartoon-like, coarse line, with pastel, but pretty bright colors. [...] What Pearson's work has in common is a sense of the out-of-the-way and a delicate magic. "

Press review

Everything We Miss (2011)

Everything We Miss is a masterpiece of poetic comic narration. Snapshots tell the alienation of a very average thirtysomething couple, repeatedly interspersed with metaphors and symbols and interrupted by glances at strangers, whose fates are only briefly touched upon, as an expression of the simultaneity and transience of things. "

Hilda and the Midnight Giant (2011) / Hilda and the Midnight Giant (2013)

“Little Hilda is the heroine of one of the most beautiful comics in recent years. Now Hilda and the midnight giant is finally appearing in German - and will hopefully bring many fans to the melancholy, playful draftsman Luke Pearson in this country too. "

“The beautifully illustrated fairy tale unfolds into a parable about tolerance. The more the characters learn about each other, the more they break down prejudices and develop understanding for others. Hilda and the Midnight Giant is not an indoctrinating children's comic, after reading it, children have to see that different is not necessarily bad. Rather, Pearson helps the imagination on the jumps and still gives the large and small readers enough freedom to think about what is being told. Especially since the end is not clear and the giant, like a force of nature, causes chaos, but Hilda can no longer shake it. "

- Daniel Wüllner : Gulliver with a difference , in: Süddeutsche Zeitung of April 5, 2013

“It has been a long time since such an enchanting comic appeared for readers from 7 to 77. Hilda, a resolute girl with blue hair, lives with her mother in a mountain hut, surrounded by elves, trolls, wooden men and other fantastic creatures. From this, the 25-year-old Englishman Luke Pearson spins amazingly complex, emotional and visually playful stories in which warmth and humor, melancholy and hope, reality and hope for the most beautiful are linked.
