Television series
The series is produced by Silvergate Media and Mercury Filmworks in Canada and the United Kingdom. Adam Idelson is the lead producer. Luke Pearson himself accompanies the production and makes sure that it complies with his template. Pearson also wrote the scripts for episodes 10 and 12.
The first two episodes had their world premiere on February 25, 2018 at the New York International Children's Film Festival (NYICFF) in the United States.
All episodes of the first season were released on September 21, 2018 on Netflix in several languages (including German). The first season adapted the comic template to the fourth volume Hilda and the Black Dog . The plot has been changed and expanded in some places, for example Alfur, David and Frida appear more often and Hilda joins the Sperling Boy Scouts earlier. Episodes one to three correspond to the first three comic volumes, volume four was realized in episodes 12 and 13 and the rest in between are self-inventions for the series or roughly taken from the comics.
A second season was confirmed at New York Comic Con 2018 on October 7, 2018. It should be published in autumn 2020. In addition, a 70-minute film special was announced at the end of 2019. The first two episodes of the second season were first shown at NYICFF on February 22, 2020.

reception
The Süddeutsche Zeitung describes the television series as "captivating and educationally valuable", as it conveys values such as tolerance free of prejudice against strangers and arouses " curiosity , courage and awe " towards new adventures. The animation and the soundscape are coordinated "with the charm" and are based on the template. The series retains a childish, funny and imaginative style without looking old-fashioned and too cute and stands out with the many characters. The Standard therefore also compares the series with films by Studio Ghibli , such as Spirited Away . It is also compared to the Welcome to Gravity Falls and Adventure Time animated series .
The series received three awards from three nominated categories at the 46th Annie Awards on February 2, 2019, as well as one award from four nominated categories at the 46th Daytime Creative Arts Emmy Awards on May 5, 2019.
