WeTransfer ( english we transfer , we transfer ' ) is a 2009 imported file hosting - service . The primary purpose of WeTransfer is not to permanently save and share files with others, as competing services offer, but only to send large files to one or more recipients (i.e. short-term storage on the server for the purpose of downloading them soon by the recipients ). A special feature is that you don't have to register in order to use the service. It is sufficient to store your own e-mail address and that of the recipient. Alternatively, you can display the download link directly and send it to the desired recipient yourself. According to the operator, files are deleted from the server one week after uploading , a file must not exceed 2 gigabytes in size, and more than three addressees cannot be entered. Up to 50 recipients can be entered with the paid WeTransfer Plus. WeTransfer announced that in November 2013, two million people a day used the service to transfer files.

function

Unlike other file hosting services, WeTransfer does not offer any application software (app) for different operating systems (there is, however, an app for iPhone and Android), but works via the web browser . If you have transferred a file to WeTransfer via the web portal or the smartphone app - encrypted -, the recipient (or recipients) receives a message and can then download this file via a non-public web link . Once this has been done, the sender is informed and the process is complete.

Optionally, after the transfer to WeTransfer, the web link for downloading is displayed directly so that it can be copied and, for example, distributed to any number of recipients by e-mail. In this case, you don't have to enter any email addresses, but you won't get a confirmation after the download.

The encryption when uploading and saving the file in the data center rented by WeTransfer is, as with all cloud providers, no guarantee for data protection, data security and discretion. Although the company is located in the Netherlands , according to the company, the data does not necessarily stay within Europe, but can also be stored or temporarily stored in other continents.

WeTransfer is financed by advertising in the form of full-screen, high-resolution photographs of the advertising customers ("wallpapers") and by regularly paying customers who receive special privileges through the subscription , such as larger data volumes, their own e-mail addresses and password protection. The direct competition are large cloud services such as Dropbox , Google Drive or OneDrive .

history

WeTransfer was founded in December 2009 in Amsterdam by the Dutchmen Ronald Hans (nickname Nalden) and Bas Beerens. Beerens runs an advertising agency and wrote software to save on courier and shipping costs to transfer large files to and from customers. Ronald Hans comes from the blogger scene , where he came up with the idea of placing large-format advertising under his blogs - today the visual leitmotif of WeTransfer.

WeTransfer claims to be profitable since 2013; In 2015, the company raised $ 25 million in venture capital to finance growth.
