Luke Ravenstahl (born February 6, 1980 in Pittsburgh , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician . He was the 59th Mayor of Pittsburgh from September 2006 to January 2014 . Ravenstahl was the youngest mayor in the history of the city and the youngest mayor of a major city in American history when he was appointed.

Political career

Born in Troy Hill , a district in the north of Pittsburgh, Ravenstahl belongs to the Democratic Party . His political career began in 2003. At the age of 23, just four months after graduating from college, he successfully ran for a seat on the city council. In 2004 and 2005 he was elected to the office of City Council President. After the death of incumbent Mayor Bob O'Connor on September 1, 2006, Ravenstahl was appointed his successor and was confirmed in office in the general election in 2007 with 63.19% of the vote. In 2009, when he was re-elected for the second term, he was again able to prevail against his competitors. In January 2014 he was replaced as mayor by Bill Peduto .
