William Mark "Bill" Peduto (* the 30th October 1964 in Scott Township , Allegheny County , Pennsylvania ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party . As of January 6, 2014, he has been the 60th mayor of Pittsburgh . Prior to his tenure as mayor, Peduto had been on the Pittsburgh City Council since January 7, 2002.

Life

Bill Peduto grew up in Bridgeville , a suburb of Pittsburgh, and graduated from high school there in 1983. He then studied political science at Carnegie Mellon University and Pennsylvania State University , but he dropped out before he could achieve a bachelor's degree. He made up for this in 2007, and later Peduto obtained a master's degree from the University of Pittsburgh . From the 1990s Peduto worked as a political advisor. In 1992 he was an adviser to then Lieutenant Governor of Pennsylvania, Mark Singel . In 1996, Peduto served as campaign leader for Dan Cohen, who was running for a seat in the United States House of Representatives .

In 2001, after Cohen's resignation, Bill Peduto applied for his seat on the Pittsburgh City Council. He was elected and took over the vacant seat of Cohen on January 7, 2002. In the city council, Peduto represented the eighth electoral district, which included the East End district. In 2005 and 2009 it was confirmed. In 2005, Peduto announced his candidacy for the Pittsburgh mayoral election in the same year, but he lost the party primary to Bob O'Connor . After Connor's death in 2006, Luke Ravenstahl first became interim mayor of Pittsburgh. In the 2007 election, Peduto originally wanted to run against Ravenstahl, but he ended his campaign before the primary because he would probably not have been able to prevail against Ravenstahl.

In December 2012, Peduto announced his candidacy for Pittsburgh mayoral election the following year. Peduto was supported by, among others, Rich Fitzgerald , the County Executive of Alleghany County. At the same time, Peduto also announced that he would no longer run for the city council in 2013. In the Democratic primary election on May 21, 2013, Peduto prevailed with 52 percent of the vote against Jack Wagner , who received 40 percent of the vote, and several other candidates. In November 2013, Peduto finally prevailed against Republican Joshua Wander and independent candidate Lester Ludwig with 84 percent of the vote. On January 6, 2014, Bill Peduto was sworn in as mayor. In December 2014, Peduto took part in the American edition of the television show Undercover Boss .

On December 14, 2016, Bill Peduto announced that he would apply for a second term as Mayor of Pittsburgh. After he was able to prevail in the primary against two internal party competitors, he was re-elected on November 7, 2017 with 96 percent of the votes without opposing candidates.
