Luke Syson

Luke Syson is an art expert and director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge since 2019 . He organized several art exhibitions and is an expert on Leonardo da Vinci paintings .

Life

From 1984 to 1986 he studied art history, art criticism and restoration at the Courtauld Institute of Art , which is part of the University of London , and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts .

In the course of his life he was a curator of various museums and organized several art exhibitions, for which he also published exhibition catalogs. From 1991 to 2001 he was the curator of the medals at the British Museum in London , during which time he helped launch the exhibition Enlightenment: Discovering the World in the Eighteenth Century . From 2003 to 2011 he worked at the National Gallery (London) as curator of Italian paintings from the period 1460–1500. There he organized the exhibitions Leonardo da Vinci: Painter at the Court of Milan and Renaissance Siena: Art for a City. He was also co-curator of the exhibitions Renaissance Faces: Van Eyck to Titian and Pisanello: Painter to the Renaissance Court . From 2012 to 2019 he was Chairman of the Iris & B. Gerald for European Sculpture and Decorative Arts at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York . Since February 2019 he has been director of the Fitzwilliam Museum in Cambridge .

He was a speaker at TED Talks in 2013 with the topic How I learned to stop worrying and love "useless" art .
