Lupus (Spoleto)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lupus (also Lupo ; † 752 ) was from 745 to 752 Dux of the Lombard Duchy of Spoleto .

Life

Lupus succeeded Dux Transamund II in June / July 745 under unknown circumstances , although a peaceful change is rather unlikely.

Lupus recognized King Ratchi's suzerainty in 746 ; now royal missi (officials) spoke law in the previously independent Spoleto. Duke Lupo visited Ratchis' court in Pavia. Lupus made gifts to the Farfa Monastery (today: Abbazia di Farfa) and founded the St. George Monastery near Rieti in 751 for Longobard and Frankish nuns. With his wife Ermelinda he is said to have donated the Church of S. Maria in Organo.

When Lupus died in Spoleto in 752, he was probably followed briefly by Dux Unnolf . Then King Aistulf did not award the ducat again, but had it administered as a crown property.
