The Lurie Garden is an approximately 20,000 m² garden at the southern end of Millennium Park in Chicago's Loop district, about half of which is green. The garden was designed by Kathryn Gustafson , Piet Oudolf and Robert Israel. The garden opened on July 16, 2004.

investment

The garden is a combination of perennials , grasses , shrubs and trees. The garden is the world's largest green roof area . A hardwood walkway over shallow water divides the garden diagonally between a "light" and a "dark" part. The garden cost $ 13.2 million to build with a $ 10 million budget for maintenance. It was named after the Ann and Robert H. Lurie Foundation , which donated USD 10 million for it. There are guided hikes, lectures, interactive demonstrations, family celebrations and picnics for visitors.

The garden lies between Lake Michigan to the east and the Chicago Loop to the west and is part of Millennium Park , which in turn is part of the larger Grant Park .

Planting in the Lurie Garden

The Lurie Garden is not designed as a botanical garden with a scientific purpose, nor is it equipped with a plant marking system. About 60% of the plants used are originally from Illinois . In spring, star-ball leeks , prairie lilies , tulips and peonies bloom there , and in summer, for example, ornamental onions , silk plants and mountain mints . Plants such as autumn anemones , asters , switchgrass and toad lilies were chosen for the autumn and winter planting .
