The star ball leek ( Allium cristophii , syn .: Allium christophii Trautv. Orth. Var., Allium albopilosum C.H.Wright ), also called garden ball leek , belongs to the subsection Christophiana Tscholokashvili from the section Kaloprason C. Koch in the subgenus Melanocrommyum within the genus leek ( Allium ) from the subfamily of the leek plants (Allioideae). It's an ornamental leek . This species is common from Asia Minor to Central Asia.

The star ball leek is a perennial herbaceous plant that reaches an average height of 50 cm.

Up to 80 individual flowers are arranged in a spherical, dold-like inflorescence , which can reach a diameter of 30 cm. The hermaphroditic, threefold, metal-purple flowers are star-shaped. There are fruit capsules formed.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

ecology

In hot, dry areas with permeable, nutrient-rich soil, the star ball leek thrives and sows. The seedlings take 5 years to bloom.

Occurrence

Allium cristophii is originally found in central Turkey and from Turkmenistan to northeastern Iran.

Systematics

One can distinguish between two subspecies:

  • Allium cristophii subsp. cristophii : It occurs in Turkey and from Turkmenistan to Iran.
  • Allium cristophii subsp. golestanicum R.M.Fritsch : It occurs in Iran.
