Ernst Rudolph Trautvetter , from 1825 von Trautvetter (born February 20, 1809 in Mitau , Kurland Governorate , Russian Empire ; † January 24, 1889 in Saint Petersburg , Russian Empire) was a Baltic German botanist and university rector. Its official botanical author's abbreviation is “ Trautv. "

Life

He was the nephew of Friedrich Wilhelm Trautvetter , royal Saxon court advisor and agent in Saint Petersburg , who was elevated to the Saxon nobility on May 23, 1825 in Dresden .

Trautvetter attended grammar school in Mitau from 1821 to 1825 and studied medicine between 1825 and 1829 and botany from 1829 to 1831 at the university in Dorpat . He received his doctorate in 1835 from the University of Königsberg as Dr. phil. and in 1837 became a corresponding member of the St. Petersburg Academy of Sciences .

From 1838 to 1859 he was a full professor of botany at St. Vladimir University in Kiev . There Trautvetter founded a botanical garden in 1839 and was Rector of St. Vladimir University from June 1847 to May 1859, succeeding Vasily Fyodorovich Fyodorov . From 1860 to 1864 he was director of the Agricultural Institute in Gorki in the Mogilev Governorate and then until 1867 head of administration and from 1867 to 1875 director of the Imperial Botanical Garden in Saint Petersburg.

Honors

  • The plant genus Trautvetteria fish. & Mey. from the buttercup family (Ranunculaceae) has been named after him.
