The Luzhniki Cable Car ( Russian Канатная дорога на Воробьёвых горах Kanatnaja doroga na Vorobjowych gorach / Cable Car on the Sparrow Hills ) is a cable car that is currently (May 2018) being built in the Moscow district of Ramenki. It leads from the Luzhniki Olympic Stadium across the Moskva River into the Sparrow Hills and has been in trial operation since May 2018.

Old chairlift

Old chairlift

In 1953, a chairlift was built to operate the large ski jump in the Sparrow Hills, which was designed by the engineer Galli. There were two stations at the 340 meter long chairlift: the valley station on the slope of the Sperlingsberge and the mountain station near the viewing platform.

The chairlift, which belonged to the Russian ski school in the last few years of its existence, got into an irreparable condition and was completely dismantled in the summer of 2016 as part of the program for the reconstruction of the sports complex on the Sparrow Hills.

After the old chairlift was dismantled, construction began on a new cable car for the 2018 World Cup , which connects the Luzhniki Stadium and the viewing platform on the Sparrow Hills with a stop at Vorobyevskaya Embankment. Despite the desired deadlines, it was officially announced on May 23, 2018 that unforeseen delays in the construction and the postponement of the opening dates for the period after the soccer World Cup have to be expected.
