Lush [ 'lʌʃ ] is a company headquartered in Poole , UK , that manufactures cosmetics such as soap and shower gel and sells them in its own chain of stores. In 2015, the company operated 936 stores worldwide and sold £ 574 million worth of products .

history

Mark and Mo Constantine and Elizabeth Weir, later co-founders of Lush , built the company Constantine and Weir in 1976 , which from 1978 onwards became one of the most important suppliers for The Body Shop . In the early 1990s, The Body Shop bought up their recipes for £ 6 million and made the products themselves. With the capital, Cosmetics to Go was founded in 1988 , a mail order business for cosmetics that had to file for bankruptcy a few years later. In 1995 Lush opened its first store in Poole in Dorset , southern England . Of the 936 branches opened up to 2016, 106 (03/2016) are in the United Kingdom and 44 (03/2016) in Germany. In addition to the main plant in Poole, there are also production facilities in Düsseldorf , from where the branches in the Benelux countries, Germany, France, Sweden and Switzerland are served, as well as in other countries such as Australia, Brazil, Japan, Canada and Croatia.

Products

Lush advertises its products with the slogan fresh handmade cosmestics (German "fresh handmade cosmetics"). Characteristic are the open, circular soap blocks, from which pieces are cut like a wheel of cheese and charged according to weight. The interior should be based on a London cheese shop and vegetable shops ( slate boards as price tags, fruit boxes). Another characteristic is the fragrance of the open products.

Environment and animal welfare

Lush markets itself as an ethical brand , i.e. a brand that observes ethical principles; it supports environmental activists like Seeds for Change and Guerrilla Gardeners . Lush says it gives 2% of its profits to non-profit organizations.

For the solid shampoos, massage bars, body butter, etc., suitably shaped blank aluminum cans with the Lush logo embossed are sold, which should make further packaging superfluous.

criticism

In 2007, Lush was criticized for the high pressure to perform under which employees have to work. The pressure is built up, for example, by strict sales guidelines and turnover rankings. Some Lush employees and former employees from German branches also criticize degrading sales practices, intimidation and a sect-like climate. In addition, the company repeatedly crosses borders. In the UK, however, Lush was ranked 50th on the Sunday Times' 2008 list of the 100 best places to work. In February 2020, the daily made serious allegations about the working conditions that German Lush employees in Düsseldorf were exposed to.
