Luther Halsey Reichelderfer

Luther Halsey Reichelderfer (born February 4, 1874 in Hallsville , Ross County , Ohio , † June 19, 1945 ) was an American politician . Between 1930 and 1933 he served as President of the Board of Commissioners Mayor of the federal capital Washington, DC

Career

Reichelderfer studied medicine at George Washington University with an MD degree in 1899. He then stayed at the university and became an instructor for surgery there. He lived in Washington DC and was a lieutenant colonel in the United States Army medical service . He is buried in Arlington National Cemetery , Virginia .

In 1930, Reichelderfer became a member of the three-person Board of Commissioners that ruled the city of Washington. Within this group he was appointed chairman. In this capacity he practically exercised the office of mayor, even if this title was not officially used between 1871 and 1975. He held this post between 1930 and 1933. He died in 1945. The exact date and place of death are not known.

In 1932 he received an honorary doctorate (LLD) from George Washington University and in 1942 a Distinguished Alumni Award.
