Proctor L. Dougherty
Proctor Lambert Dougherty (born July 9, 1873 in Boston , Massachusetts , † October 15, 1966 in Kensington , Maryland ) was an American politician . Between 1926 and 1930 he served as President of the Board of Commissioners as Mayor of Washington, DC, the federal capital
Career
Proctor Dougherty graduated from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where he was trained as a specialist in electrical engineering. In 1900 he came to Washington, where he first worked for a city authority and then for the elevator manufacturer Otis . From 1919 to 1926 he was a manager of the Otis Elevator Company . Politically, he belonged to the Republican Party .
In 1926, Dougherty became a member of the three-person Board of Commissioners that ruled the city of Washington. Within this group he was appointed chairman. In this capacity he practically exercised the office of mayor, even if this title was not officially used between 1871 and 1975. He held this office between 1926 and 1930. After his time as head of the Board of Commissioners of Washington he was employed in various other local positions until 1958. He was also a member of numerous organizations and associations. Proctor Dougherty died in Kensington on October 15, 1966.
