Luther monument

The Luther monument in Bad Schandau in the Saxon Switzerland-Eastern Ore Mountains district commemorates the reformer Martin Luther .

Location

The Luther monument is located above the city park (Kurpark), halfway between the Bad Schandau town center and the Ostrau disk, a flat area around the Ostrau district . It lies on the steep slope from the plateau down into the valleys of the Elbe and Kirnitzsch . The memorial stands on the so-called Lutherplatz, a small plateau on the Lutherweg, which is a hiking trail from Bad Schandau via Neuschandau to Ostrau.

history

The Luther monument was erected in 1817 on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the dissemination of Martin Luther's 95 theses . The initiator, as can be seen from the chronicles, was Samuel Gottfried Hering, who laid the foundation stone for the spa in Bad Schandau with the construction of a bathhouse around 1800. The Saxonia Mountain Association renovated the square and the monument in 1881 and 1900.

description

The Luther monument is a two-meter-high niche carved into the Elbe sandstone rock, in which there is a bust of Luther based on the Worms model. Above the bust, on the upper frame of the monument, one can read in a semicircle: A solid castle is our God , based on the hymn of the same name composed by Luther . On the base of the bust is the date October 31, 1517 , when Luther first put his 95 theses into circulation as an attachment to a letter to the Archbishop of Mainz and Magdeburg, Albrecht von Brandenburg . Below is the inscription:

God's word and Luther's teaching will pass
away now and never more!

At the bottom of the Luther memorial there is the following reference to the history of the memorial: Erected in 1817. Renewed in 1900. Most of the memorial is painted white.

Luther oak

The Luther oak stands in front of the monument , the last of three former Luther oaks at this location. During the construction of the monument at the beginning of the 19th century, it was transported to Bad Schandau together with two other oaks from the Wartburg in Eisenach , where Martin Luther translated the New Testament . One oak died after a short time, the other two grew into stately trees despite their short distance of only a good meter and, together with the Luther monument, were a popular place for excursions.

In autumn 2011, forest workers mistakenly felled the smaller of the two remaining oaks during maintenance work on behalf of the city of Bad Schandau, as both the city administration of Bad Schandau and the Saxon Switzerland national park administration had knowledge of only one Luther oak . In order to honor and protect the last remaining tree, a sign on the Luther monument should again point out the importance of the oak, as was the case before the fall of the Wall .

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation , a new oak was planted on August 27, 2017 as part of a spa concert by the Bad Schandau Chor New Choir Liederkranz 1993 Bad Schandau and the Mayor of Bad Schandau on the site of the Luther oak that was felled in autumn 2011.
