Mammillaria thornberi is a species of the genus Mammillaria in the cactus family(Cactaceae). The specific epithet thornberi honors the American botanist John James Thornber (1872–1962). English common names are "Clustered Pincushion" and "Slender Pincushion".

Mammillaria thornberi sprouts and usually forms dense cushions. The cloudy or purple-green shoots are slender, cylindrical in shape and often slightly tapered at the base. They grow to be 5 to 10 inches high and 1 to 2.5 inches in diameter. The slightly flaccid, conical to cylindrical shaped warts do not contain any milky juice . The axillae are bare. A light brown to dark reddish brown central spine is present. It is 0.9 to 1.8 inches long. The 15 to 20 radial spines are white or yellowish with a dark tip and 5 to 9 millimeters long.

The broad, funnel-shaped flowers are purple to lavender pink and measure 1.5 to 2 centimeters in diameter. The protruding, thick fruits are red. They contain black seeds .

Distribution, systematics and endangerment

Mammillaria thornberi is common in the US state of Arizona and the Mexican state of Sonora .

It was first described in 1902 by Charles Russell Orcutt .

The following subspecies are distinguished:

  • Mammillaria thornberi subsp. thornberi :
    Synonyms are Chilita thornberi (Orcutt) Orcutt (1926) and Mammillaria fasciculata Britton & Rose (1923, nom. inval. ICBN -Article 53.1). The nominate form has tapered shoots with a diameter of up to 2.5 centimeters. The 15 to 20 radial spines are conspicuously downy.
  • Mammillaria thornberi subsp. yaquensis (RTCraig) DRHunt :
    The first description was in 1945 as Mammillaria yaquensis by Robert T. Craig . David Richard Hunt introduced the species in 1997 as a subspecies to Mammillaria thornberi . Synonyms are Mammillaria thornberi var. Yaquensis (RTCraig) Neutel. (1986) and Bartschella yaquensis (RTCraig) Doweld (2000). The subspecies has smaller shoots that are up to 7 inches long and 1.5 inches in diameter and fall off easily. The 18–19 radial spines are finely downy-haired.

In the Red List of Threatened Species of the IUCN , the species is listed as " Least Concern (LC) ". H. listed as not endangered.
