The Brotherhood of the increase of the True Cross of the Lord was (Ukrainian Луцьке братство Воздвиження Чесного і Животворного Хреста Господнього) an Orthodox community in Lutsk in today's Ukraine . It existed from 1617 to 1713 and from 1871 to 1944.

history

1617 to 1713

In 1617 the brotherhood of nobles, clergymen and citizens was founded in Łuck in what was then the Kingdom of Poland-Lithuania . It was supposed to support the Orthodox believers after the Łuck Eparchy converted to the United Greek Catholic Church in 1596 and almost all church buildings and monasteries had been transferred to the new church. In 1619 King Sigismund III. a privilege that confirmed their rights and possessions. The brotherhood ran a hospital and school for boys from wealthy and poor families.

The brotherhood was divided into older brothers from the nobility and clergy and younger brothers from the bourgeoisie and was led by an igumen .

1620 confirmed Patriarch Theophanes III. of Jerusalem her rights and gave her the status of a Stauro region , which she subordinated directly to the Patriarchate of Constantinople . In 1631 a stone Exaltation of the Cross was built. A printing company was founded around 1635, but it only produced one book printing, an apostolar and a gospel book. In 1641 the hospital got a stone building, in 1647 a two-storey building complex with hospital, school, cells and the church was completed.

Around 1613 the monastery joined the United Church and was handed over to the Basilian Order, the brotherhood was dissolved.

1871 to 1944

In 1871 the Orthodox Brotherhood was re-established in Lutsk, now in Russia. In 1890 it had 79 members.

Since 1920 it existed under Polish rule without a statute. It was a center of the Ukrainian national consciousness. It was dissolved in 1931 and re-established in 1935, albeit without the rights to the former properties.

In 1944 the Brotherhood was dissolved after the city was conquered by the Red Army.

Since 1990

In 1990 the community was re-established as the brotherhood of the first called Andreas . The Lutsk Brotherhood building complex has been restored and is now an architectural monument.
