Werner Krabs

Werner Krabs (born April 25, 1934 in Hamburg-Altona ; † March 6, 2017 ) was a German mathematician and professor in the mathematics department of the TU Darmstadt .

Scientific career

In 1963 Werner Krabs received his doctorate from Lothar Collatz at the University of Hamburg with the dissertation Some Problems to Solve the Discrete, Linear Chebyshev Problem .

Werner Krabs was appointed to the TU Darmstadt in 1972 . At the Department of Mathematics, he belonged to the working group “ Approximation and Control Theory ”. He mainly worked in the areas of numerics and optimal control of physical processes , especially in the area of time-discrete controls . He also dealt with operations research and game theory . Krabs has supervised numerous diploma theses and several doctoral theses. Some of his students became professors themselves.

Krabs has published a number of books in his field.

From 1979 to 1981 he was Vice President of the TU Darmstadt. He was also dean twice and vice dean several times and was involved in university policy work in various committees. From 1995 to 1999 he was the spokesman for the Interdisciplinary Working Group on Science, Technology and Safety ( IANUS ).

In September 1999, Krabs retired. He continued to be involved in teaching.

Sports

Werner Krabs was also an avid athlete. He began his athletic career in athletics at the age of 14. He received his first sports badge at the age of 19. In 2015, he achieved his 60th sports badge at the age of 80. He was also active as a trainer in his sports club for more than 40 years.
