Lykorias

Lykorias ( Greek  Λυκωριάς , Latinized Lycorias) is a nereid in Greek mythology .

meaning

Like all Nereids, Lykorias represents a divine hypostasis of one of the properties of the sea or one of the properties and things that people hoped for from the sea.

The nereids are specifically nymphs of the Mediterranean , while the nymphs of other seas are known as oceanids . You protect castaways and entertain sailors with games. They are companions of the god Poseidon . In many ancient Greek depictions, the Nereids ride on the backs of dolphins .

Lykorias represents the first light of the sea, which is why it is also described as the yellow nereid.

Historical mention

The Nereid of Lykorias is mentioned in Virgil and Hygin .

ancestry

Lykorias is - like all 50-100 Nereids (depending on the author) - a daughter of the Greek sea god Nereus (son of Gaia and Pontus ) and the Oceanid Doris (daughter of the Titans Oceanus and Tethys ).
