Oceanid

The Oceanids . Gustave Doré , 1860

The Oceanids ( ancient Greek Ὠκεανίδες , plural of Ὠκεανίς ) are the daughters of Oceanus and Tethys in Greek mythology , only Hyginus gives Pontos and Mare as their parents .

Their areas of activity are the sea and the fresh waters, which they share with the Nereids (the daughters of the Oceanid Doris ) and the nymphs and from which they are not always distinguished.

Most of them are just poetic names that have not been further differentiated mythologically, in mythology and in cult they only play a subordinate role.

In ancient representations they appear in the form of a woman, only Eurynomials are depicted with fish tails, which differ from this.

Names of the Oceanids

In the Theogony, Hesiod gives their number and that of their brothers, the Potamoi ( ancient Greek Ποταμοί , rivers ) as 3000 each, but only lists the 41 oldest Oceanids by name. Further Oceanid catalogs can be found

Other authors only mention individual Oceanids in certain contexts. For example, in Homer's Iliad only Eurynomials and in the Odyssey only Perse are listed by name.

Virgil's list of the Oceanids is very similar to a Nereid catalog , but two of the names listed are expressly referred to as Oceanids. Other authors refer to goddesses like Nemesis or Tyche as Oceanids, with others they are only eponymous namesake for places, such as Dodona for the oracle site Dodona or Ephyra for Corinth .
