Lymphopenia can u. a. caused by:
- increased cortisol level (e.g. Cushing's syndrome , corticosteroid therapy, stress ),
- Therapy with cytostatics and immunosuppressants ,
- Hodgkin's disease (malignant changes in the bone marrow )
- Miliary tuberculosis ,

- Infection with influenza A virus H1N1 (and other influenza A viruses), often combined with an increase in monocytes ; H1N1 was e.g. B. responsible for the Spanish flu , the H1N1 pandemic 2009/10 and the virus flu in Brazil in 2016
With lymphopenia, the risk of developing viral infections increases due to the lack of lymphocytes .
