Lyngør is a village on several small islands off the southeast coast of Norway, between Larvik and Arendal on the Skagerrak , in the municipality of Tvedestrand in the province of Agder . The Lyngørfjord separates the islands from the mainland.

location

Lyngør is mostly located on both banks of the narrow, only 70-100 m wide Lyngørsund on the 0.7 km² main island Lyngøya on its south side and the three archipelagos Steinsøya, Holmen and Odden on the north side opposite . A smaller number of houses can be found on the northeastern end of Askerøya island, southwest of Lyngøya.

The place can only be reached by boat and there are no cars. The administrative center of the municipality of Tvedestrand is about 12 km southwest.

The place

The place, formerly a popular place of residence of ship captains , is known for its picturesque harbor and its beautiful wooden houses. It is a very popular holiday destination, especially for sailors, in the summer months, and most of the houses are only inhabited in summer. The permanent resident population is only around 70-80 and it is difficult to prevent further emigration. There is a sailmaker's shop, a village shop and several restaurants that are only open in summer.

On the small archipelago Kjeholmen a few hundred meters northeast of Lyngøya stands the Lyngør fyr light , which is now operated automatically and used as a holiday cabin .

history

The Battle of Lyngør

In Lyngørsund on July 6, 1812, during the so-called gunboat war between Great Britain and Denmark-Norway, the sea battle of Lyngør took place. The British ship of the line HMS Dictator (64 cannons) sank the Danish-Norwegian frigate Najaden (42 cannons), the only remaining larger ship of the Danish-Norwegian Navy. This meant the de facto end of the Danish-Norwegian participation in the Napoleonic Wars . The wreck of the Naiads was found in 1957.
