Aerial photographs of the Falkland Islands and Dependencies Aerial Survey Expedition (1955–1957) from 1956 were used to map it. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named him in 1960 after Percy Comyn Lyon (1862-1952) from the British Department of Scientific and Industrial Research and chairman of the inter-ministerial committee for the exploration and development of the British Antarctic Territories of 1917 to 1920.
