The MÁV series MDmot / MDa were diesel-hydraulic luggage railcars of the Hungarian state railways Magyar Államvasutak (MÁV) for passenger train traffic on non-electrified main and branch lines . The vehicles were developed and delivered by Ganz-MÁVAG in Budapest from 1970 to 1976 .

history

In order to modernize operations on main and branch lines, multi-part multiple units were delivered to MÁV from 1970 onwards, which consisted of a diesel-hydraulic baggage rail car, two or four four-axle trailer cars and a control car . These units were supposed to replace the two- and three-axle multiple units that were still running on branch lines at that time.

A four-part set consisted of a 2nd class sidecar and a 1st class sidecar as well as the control car and offered 196 seats. The six-part set consisted of three 2nd class sidecars and one 1st class sidecar as well as the control car and offered 366 seats. The total length of a four-part train was 82,380 millimeters, that of the six-part train was 127,180 millimeters.

The vehicles were used on the non-electrified MÁV routes, especially in the Debrecen , Pécs , Szeged and Szombathely areas . At the time, they were modern vehicles that were popular because of their smoothness and were in service until 2004, when the first decommissioning took place after the delivery of more modern vehicles. Then, around 2009, the trains left in Pécs. In 2010 only a few trains were still in service in Debrecen, which will probably be retired in 2011.

technical features

The specified technical data refer to the MDmot series luggage railcar . It was powered by the 12 VFE 17/24 twelve-cylinder four-stroke diesel engine from Ganz Mavag. The hydrodynamic power transmission system consisted of a torque converter and two mechanical switching stages arranged after it. The power transmission system automatically switched to the relevant gear. The maximum permissible speed was variably selectable with 70 or 100 km / h for the respective purpose. This was realized through the gear ratio.

The trains were electrically heated from the start. A heating unit was housed in the control car and obtained its energy from the MDmot railcar .

The sidecars and control cars were lightweight constructions. The entry rooms were located at the ends of the car. There were two passenger compartments and two toilets per car.

The multiple units also attracted a great deal of international attention, and similar trains were delivered to other European countries or overseas.
