Máire Hickey

Máire Hickey OSB (* 1938 in Dublin ) is an Irish classical philologist and Benedictine. She was Abbess of the Benedictine Abbey of Sankt Scholastika Burg Dinklage from 1983 to 2007 and Abbess of the Benedictine Abbey of Kylemore from 2007 to 2013.

Life

Máire Hickey attended an Irish convent school and entered the religious community , but after a short novitiate from again. From 1956 she studied ancient languages at various English universities. After completing her doctorate, she worked at the University of Oxford . In 1974 she joined the order of the Benedictine nuns in the Abbey of Sankt Scholastika in Dinklage, Lower Saxony . In 1977 she made her profession ; six years later the perpetual vows.

In 1983 Hickey was elected abbess of the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Scholastica; In 1995 he was re-elected. In 2007 she did not stand for election for reasons of age. She has lived in Kylemore Abbey in Connemara , the oldest Irish Benedictine abbey, since 2007 ; despite her retirement, she continues as abbess.

For many years, Máire Hickey was chairwoman of the Association of Benedictine Convents in the German-Speaking Area (VBD). From 1997 to 2006 she was the first moderator of the Communio Internationalis Benedictinarum (CIB) and thus involved in a restructuring of Benedictine abbeys worldwide.

She became known by participating in a sit-in strike by the nuns to prevent the deportation of a Ukrainian family who had found asylum in the abbey.
